Agriculture in Nepal: Challenges and Opportunities:
The agriculture sector faces several challenges in Nepal, which includes low productivity, lack of adequate infrastructure,high instability, shocks due to climate change and investment . This article is being addressed to the challenges and explore possible options for sustainable and accelerated agriculture growth. Nepalese agriculture cannot meet the growing food requirements of its exploding population. Rapidly increasing population which puts pressure on limited land resources causes low land productivity. Low production, distribution, poor access to food in remote areas, and low income are key factors causing food insecurity.
Agriculture status of Nepal:
The farming community has a high illiteracy rate, rural-urban migration rate, less exposure to technology and increased exposure to global markets as sources of instability in the agricultural sector. With some other difficulties in the agricultural sector, like lack of educated farmers, low agricultural extension agents and inadequate inputs, lack of sectoral infrastructure (including access to market), low irrigation infrastructure and failure in the industry development policy, most of the agricultural community in Nepal faces these problems. Agricultural trade is important for the agriculture sector.
Challenges:
Nepal's agricultural sector has many challenges. The sector can face high risks due to climate change, high instability and shocks due to climate change, and the high level of human capital which is not optimized. This article will address key challenges of the agriculture sector which can be converted to opportunities for growth and change. Agriculture in Nepal There are several sectors in Nepal, however, agriculture is a major contributor to the country's economy accounting for about 34 percent of the GDP. Agriculture sector in Nepal has shown consistent growth from the 1960s to present. The sector has been the backbone of the rural economy and it is directly and indirectly linked to a number of economic activities.
Opportunities:
In order to overcome the challenges and enhance agriculture productivity, Nepal should focus on developing sustainable practices and enhancing its potential through an integrated approach. Large-scale and resource efficient agricultural practices that are integrated with other sectors of the economy is a viable and cost-effective way to improve the productivity of farmers. This approach would address both the short-term and long-term challenges. It will also result in synergistic improvements in productivity, employment and income. Enhancing Agriculture's Contribution to National Development. This is a time of transition for the Nepal government, as it faces a difficult political and security environment that requires new approaches to development.
